T-Red
(ref. Judge Halliday)
When Cyril J.Ratfinkle fed the blood of the genetically resurrected
dinosaur Satanus to Rex Peters, he had no idea that he was creating a
problem that would plague the Judges many years later. The plasma
transformed Peters into a horrific carnivorous tyrannosaur-man, who went
on the devour several individuals, including his wife Lynsey
and Ratfinkle himself. Peters was eventually stopped by Judge Dredd, and
Ratfinkle's notes were recovered (see the story "The Blood of
Satanus"). But this wasn't the end of the story. As an expert photocopyist, Ratfinkle knew the value of crisp, clear
copies. Unknown to the Judges, Cyril had copied his notes and left them
with his brother Colin for safekeeping, along with a sample of the
Satanus serum. After Colin's death in a tragic flower-arranging
accident, the notes eventually found their way into the hands of someone
who recognised their true potential...
Fast forward a few years. Given that the citizens of Mega-City One are
both monumentally bored most of the time, as well as extremely gullible
and stupid, it should come as no surprise that there is very little they
won't do to themselves for a little fun. Add to that the atmosphere of
fear that the Judges engender, and one can see the attraction of living
free from guilt and fear, even for a short while. This is the ultimate
reason behind the success of the new street drug, T-Red.
Sold in small hypo-caps, T-Red is a crimson liquid that you inject
directly through the skin and into the bloodstream. The effect is a
feeling of strength and power, coupled with a freedom from guilt and
fear. The drug doesn't over-ride common sense; users will be
perfectly aware that they cannot fly, for instance, and so won't take up dares to
jump off the top of the block, but it does allow even the meekest of men
to do things they wouldn't dream of doing in their normal lives. While
under the effects of T-Red, users feel no empathy for those around them,
tending to view them as cattle; weak, inferior beings to be exploited in
whatever way takes the user's fancy. Additional effects include
increased speed, strength and stamina, and an inability to feel pain.
Like most drugs, T-Red has it's downside. Firstly, it's psychologically
addictive, though the addiction has no physiological basis. Addicts
forced to go without invariably end up in the psycho-cubes, or dead by
suicide. Secondly, overuse causes some rather unpleasant
side effects, such small patches of hard black scales and a
tendency to go futsie. Users can be identified by their increased need
for protein, preferably in the form of undercooked meat.
The truth of the matter of course is that T-Red is a modified
form of the Satanus plasma. The molecule bonds with key receptor sites in the
brain and causes minor physiological changes, diverting blood away from
those parts of the brain that govern higher thought and social skills,
and sending it to the so-called "Reptile Brain". To prevent the radical
transformation that overtook Rex Peters, T-Red uses a genetic blocker,
designed to render inactive the majority of the dinosaur DNA. Like many
street drugs, quality control isn't much of a concern however, and some
batches go out either partially blocked, or not blocked at all.
Some adventure possibilities;
1. The Judges become aware of the distribution of T-Red on the streets,
and encounter a gang of Juves hopped up on the filthy stuff. While the
Juves would normally be no threat, T-Red makes them a considerable
challenge.
2. Wilber Wattle has had a bad day. A T-Red pusher, he was tapped on the
way home and has had the day's profits stolen. Realising his bosses will
take the money off him in body mass, he has decided to vanish. To cover
his disappearance, he has dumped the rest of his T-Red stock into the
water supply of his block. When a blockful of tightly wound cits forgets
to be scared, all hell is going to break loose, and the Judges have to
restore order.
3. The Judges have been assigned to go Wally, to try and get a fix on
the source of the T-Red problem in their sector. Only there's a user in
the sector house, and the local boss-man knows they're coming.
4. A local kingpin has just received some bad news. Seems he's got a
terminal case of the Crawling Buboes, the result of a night on Squid Row
with a alien Eezie-Squeezie. Never one to hide his pain, he's decided to
go out with a bang, and has released the latest shipment of T-Red
without the genetic blockers. Tonight, thousands of users are going to
go dino in a big way, unless the Judges can prevent the major part of
the distribution from going ahead.
